What is Low Libido in Women?

A low libido is defined as either a decreased or totally absent desire for sexual activity, which can be short-term or long-term. The degree of reduced desire varies from person to person depending upon their age, the changes in hormone levels during different parts of one’s life, as well as a wide variety of psychological and lifestyle factors.

In medical terminology, low libido often refers to Female Sexual Interest/Arousal Disorder (FSIAD) a diagnosis that indicates a female patient experiences a constant and pervasive lack of sexual desire, sexual thoughts, and/or a lack of ability to respond physically to sexual stimulation.

Ayurvedic Perspective, Causes & Treatment

According to Ayurveda, low libidos are caused by imbalance within our bodies; and this can be seen through three different doshas:

Vata Dosha – mainly associated with dryness, anxiety, and lack of energy.
Pitta Dosha – primarily responsible for hormonal levels (imbalance) + irritation.
Kapha Dosha – if a person has excess Kapha in the body, there will be little energy and stimulation.

In accordance to Ayurveda, low libido can also be attributed to specifically low amounts of Shukra Dhatu (reproductive tissue) and low levels of Ojas (bodily energy).

Ayurvedic Causes

  • Poor digestion (Imbalance of Agni)
  • Toxin build up (Ama)
  • Stress + mental imbalances
  • Improper lifestyle (Disturbances to Dinacharya)
  • Weak reproductive tissue (Shukra Dhatu Kshaya)

Ayurvedic Treatment Approach

  • Herbal Support (Balya & Rasayana Herbs)
Herbs like Ashwagandha, Shilajit, Safed Musli, and Gokshura help improve strength, energy, and vitality.
  • Detoxification (if required)
Panchakarma therapies help remove toxins and restore internal balance.
  • Diet & Lifestyle Correction (Dinacharya)
Focus on nutritious diet, proper routine, quality sleep, and regular physical activity.
