What is PCOS / PCOD?

PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) refers to a hormonal disorder that causes excessive production of male hormones (androgens) by the ovaries and results in irregular ovulation cycles and the formation of cysts in the ovaries.

Both terms are frequently confused and utilized interchangeably.

The distinction between PCOD and PCOS:

PCOD (Polycystic Ovarian Disease), is a condition in which the ovaries produce immature eggs that do not mature. An individual's ovaries may develop fluid-filled cysts.

PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) is a much more complicated, metabolic and hormonal disorder that has an impact on the entire endocrine system.

However, some of common characteristics of both PCOS and PCOD include:

1) Hormonal imbalance
2) Irregular menstrual cycles
3) Difficulty with ovulation.

Symptoms of PCOS / PCOD

Women with ovary hormone imbalance can have a variety of symptoms, including:

  • Period cyles that vary from month to month, or none at all
  • Excessive amounts of unwanted body hair (i.e., around the face, chest and back)
  • Acne and/or oily skin
  • Weight gain, with most of it in the abdomen (waist)
  • Thinning or falling out hair
  • Inability to conceive
  • Dark patches of skin on the neck and/or armpits
  • Mood swings and/or anxiety or depression
  • Lack of energy evidenced by continuous feelings of tiredness

Causes of PCOS / PCOD

PCOS / PCOD can be caused by multiple physical and psychological factors:

  • Hormonal imbalance (too many male hormones)
  • Body not using its insulin
  • Family members who had the same problem
  • Continuously inflamed body tissue
  • Unhealthy diet choices (high sugar/processed food)
  • Sedentary life styles
  • High amounts of daily stress and/or poor sleep

Modern (Allopathy) Perspective, Treatment & Side Effects

Modern Perspective

Current (Allopathic) medicine views PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) as a health disorder involving both hormones and how they work. The primary causes of PCOS are insulin resistance and an imbalance in endocrine (hormonal) activity.

Common Treatments

  • Hormonal pills (oral contraceptives) – regulating your cycle with the use of hormonal pills (or “the pill”).
  • Insulin sensitizing medications – in order to help your body become more insulin sensitive and improve your insulin resistance.
  • Fertility treatments – to help stimulate your ovaries and induce ovulation in women who want to conceive.
  • Anti-androgen medications – help reduce your symptoms (acne, excessive hair growth, etc.)
  • Limitations/Side Effects of Treatments

Limitations & Side Effects

While these treatments may help manage symptoms, they have certain limitations:

  • Do not address the root cause
  • Hormone dependency for cycle regulation
  • Possible side effects like weight gain, nausea, mood changes
  • Symptoms may return after stopping medication
  • Not suitable for long-term holistic healing

Ayurvedic Perspective, Causes & Treatment

The Ayurvedic view of PCOS/PCOD is that it is mainly a result of an imbalance between the doshas of Kapha and Vata, as well as having poor digestion (known as mandagni) and having a build-up of toxins (known as ama) in the body.

These imbalances ultimately disrupt the way that the reproductive system (Artava Dhatu) works and cause a disturbance in hormonal balance.

Ayurvedic Causes

  • Weak digestion (Mandagni)
  • Accumulation of toxins (Ama)
  • Kapha imbalance leading to cyst formation
  • Vata imbalance affecting menstrual cycle
  • Stress and mental disturbance
  • Improper diet and sedentary lifestyle

Ayurvedic Treatment Approach

  • Herbal Support (Balya & Rasayana Herbs)
Herbs like Ashwagandha, Shilajit, Safed Musli, and Gokshura help improve strength, energy, and vitality.
  • Detoxification (if required)
Panchakarma therapies help remove toxins and restore internal balance.
  • Diet & Lifestyle Correction (Dinacharya)
Focus on nutritious diet, proper routine, quality sleep, and regular physical activity.
