What is Diabetes?

A person who suffers from diabetes cannot effectively control their body’s ability to keep blood sugar (glucose) levels healthy unless they:

1. Produce enough insulin.
2. Use insulin effectively (have an insulin resistance).

Diabetes is classified into three categories:

1. Type 1 diabetes requires the use of insulin.
2. Type 2 diabetes is the most prevalent type of diabetes. It generally occurs as a result of lifestyle choices and cellular metabolism.
3. Pre-diabetes occurs as a transitional condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal; however, this does not qualify as diabetes under the strict definition of diabetes.

Additionally, it is important to remember that blood sugar can fluctuate in the short term for reasons independent of whether or not one has diabetes:

1. Fluctuations can happen over a longer period of time (i.e., months).
2. Long-term management is needed to control blood sugar.
3. If not managed, long-term complications may exist in multiple body systems.

Modern (Allopathy) Perspective, Treatment & Side Effects

Modern Perspective

Modern medicine aims to control blood sugar levels in the following ways

  • Taking anti-diabetic oral medications
  • Using insulin therapy
  • Checking blood sugar levels regularly
  • Making changes to diet and lifestyle

Common Treatments

  1. Oral Medications – To control blood sugar levels
  2. Insulin Therapy – In moderate to severe cases
  3. Lifestyle Modifications – Diet and exercise
  4. Regular Monitoring – Blood sugar testing

Limitations & Side Effects

While effective in controlling blood sugar levels, allopathic treatments have limitations:

  • Do not always treat the root cause of the conditions
  • Create a risk of patient dependence on medication
  • Side effect of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar)
  • Weight gain
  • Disablement
  • Long-term complications to the organs regardless of control

Ayurvedic Perspective, Causes & Treatment

According to Ayurveda, Diabetes is correlated with Madhumeha, a condition caused by imbalance in Tridosha (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) along with impaired digestion (Agni) and accumulation of toxins (Ama).

It is also associated with improper functioning of Meda Dhatu (fat tissue) and weakened metabolism.

Ayurvedic Causes

  • Weak digestive fire (Mandagni)
  • Accumulation of toxins (Ama)
  • Kapha imbalance (linked with obesity and lethargy)
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Excess intake of sweet and heavy foods
  • Stress and mental imbalance
  • Irregular daily routine

Ayurvedic Treatment Approach

  • Herbal Support (Balya & Rasayana Herbs)
Herbs like Ashwagandha, Shilajit, Safed Musli, and Gokshura help improve strength, energy, and vitality.
  • Detoxification (if required)
Panchakarma therapies help remove toxins and restore internal balance.
  • Diet & Lifestyle Correction (Dinacharya)
Focus on nutritious diet, proper routine, quality sleep, and regular physical activity.
